what do you mean by racial color blindness? hopefully you want to do work against the notion that that will be a progressive way to end racism, and create equality. if not, read some tim wise, after reading some biko and get to work because color blindness is such a savage idea.
I believe racial colorblindness is just as pervasive an idea as overt racism. In my opinion, the problem is that we do not acknowledge and appreciate our differences racially, for that would be seen as somehow “racist.” Not just race though… We have to think on an intersectional level. How all of our individual identities manipulate and affect our views and experiences, and are affected differently by structural privilege and oppression. But most important of all… I want to mention about how sometimes social justice movements can be just as damaging and oppressive as structural oppression itself, if the social justice coalition or movement is not intersectional. If you have to push others down in order to fight your way up, you know your movement is not intersectional. Some examples, Suffrage Movement (Women’s rights movement), which would not let a lot of women of color join because they viewed race as a liability. Or a more recent day example… The Same Sex Marriage movement and not being inclusive to queer people who do not even want to get married or the movement itself not understanding the class issues that go with getting involved in a marriage… A marriage is basically legally rewarding people for being with one partner… Don’t even get me started with the religious undertones and privilege with this topic, as well as class… So there are other versions of identities that often get pushed under the table when movements think they only need/want to fight for one small slice of equality…. |
